A new study form Harvard Medical School claims high daily levels of vitamin B6 may reduce the risk of men getting colon cancer by 58 percent.

Vitamin B-6 is a water-soluble vitamin and is part of the vitamin B complex. Vitamin B-6 plays a role in the synthesis of antibodies by the immune system. Antibodies are needed to fight many diseases. Vitamin B-6 helps maintain normal nerve function and also acts in the formation of red blood cells.

Vitamin B6 is involved in around 100 physiologic reactions and functions in the body including protein metabolism, red blood cell function and proper functioning of the nervous and immune systems. The vitamin can be sourced from Multivitamins, fortified cereals, beans, meat, poultry, fish and some vegetables and fruits.

Scientists are not sure why high blood levels of vitamin B6 protect again colon and colorectal cancer, but they noticed that individuals who have higher levels of B6 have a less chance of having damaged DNA, which can lead to cancer.

There are other precautions men can take to lower the risk of colon cancer such as:
  • Multiple vitamins with folate have shown to reduce risk
  • Keeping a healthy body weight
  • Maintaining an exercise program
Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer in the United States, according to the American Cancer Society.
