Women suffer from depression twice as much as men do, so it's best to be knowledgable on the various forms of depression and ways to deal with the illness. Doctors feel that depression is brought on by a variety of reasons such as genetics, body chemistry, life changes, internal anger, illness, and/or drug or alcohol abuse. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, depression is one of the most common mental problems for women, and it affects them twice as often as men.

There are many different types of depressions that women suffer from. The most common types of depression are listed below:
  • Major Depression : An illness that can impair the subject's ability to function in social settings. This form of depression is profound and relatively constant throughout her life.
  • Postpartum Depression : A form of depression that arrives after giving birth. It can be caused by a number of physical, psychological and social factors including postpartum hormone levels and sleep deprivation.
  • Premenstrual Symptoms/Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) : A form of depression that arrives prior to, and during, your menstruation. Many women who suffer from PMDD feel suicidal and suffer bouts of extreme depression.
  • Bipolar Disorder : Categorized by extreme periods of highs and lows, dramatic mood swings, and changes in behavior.
  • Dysthymia : A chronic form of depression that lasts for at least two years.
  • Seasonal Affective Disorder : Appears to be linked to the seasons - typically lasting from fall until spring.

Cures / Preventions for Women and Depression:

If you feel that you are suffering from slight depression, you may be able to deal with it yourself. Other ways to deal with depression include: seeking support through your family and friends by spending time with them; exercising can increase your body chemicals and promote self-esteem; and getting enough rest (at least 8 hours of sleep per night).
