Alcohol consumption has consequences for the health and well - being of those who drink and, by extension, the lives of those around them. Alcoholism, also known as "alcohol dependence," is a disease that includes:

Craving: A strong need, or compulsion, to drink.

Loss of control: The inability to limit one's drinking on any given occasion.

Physical dependence: Withdrawal symptoms, such as nausea, sweating, shakiness, and anxiety, occur when alcohol use is stopped after a period of heavy drinking.

Tolerance: The need to drink greater amounts of alcohol in order to "get high."

Alcoholism has a great impact on not only the person with the disease but with other people surrounding them. Some examples include:
  • Alcohol contributes to 100,000 deaths annually, making it the third leading cause of preventable death in this country
  • 41% of all traffic fatalities are alcohol related
  • Although there are fewer deaths from alcohol related causes than from cancer or heart disease, alcohol related deaths tend to occur at much younger ages
What problems are caused by too much alcohol? Excess alcohol can lead to health problems including:
  • depression
  • liver cirrhosis
  • heart failure
  • damage to the brain and nervous system.

Treatment for Alcoholism:

The difficulty of treating alcoholism should not be minimised – it can be very hard, even with support from family and friends. However, there are a a number of steps you can take including not drinking alcohol on weekdays, stop drinking alcohol during the day at work, take a different rout home so you aren't tempted to visit a pub, and visit family instead of drinking friends.
