A nose bleed is when the blood vessels on the septum (the firm tissue which divides the nose) has broken started to bleed. These blood vessels can break fairly easily. The most common area for a nose bleed is near the front of the nose, but occasionally the bleeding comes from the back, near the throat.

Nosebleeds are a fairly common problem. They are more common in children than adults. Children tend to have bleeding from the front portion of the nose where adults are more likely to have bleeding from the back of the nose, which can be more serious.

  • An infection of the lining of the nose, or sinusitis or infected adenoids.
  • An allergy which causes hayfever or coughing.
  • Some people have blood vessels in the nose that bleed easily, perhaps in warm dry air, or after exercise.
  • Bumps or falls on the nose are an obvious cause.
  • If something has been pushed up the nose, and damaged the blood vessels.
  • Picking the nose, especially after one bleed can keep the problem going.
  • In rare cases there is a bleeding or clotting problem.
  • Adolescent girls may get more nosebleeds around the time they start having periods.
  • Dry air.
  • High altitude.
  • Drug abuse.

Treatment for Nose Bleeds:

Treatments for nose bleeds include:
  • Sit up.
  • Squeeze the soft part of the nose, just above the nostrils, firmly together with your finger and thumb. Hold this for 5 to 10 minutes.
  • A cold cloth or cold pack over the forehead or the bridge (top part) of the nose sometimes helps.
  • If the bleeding does not stop or if it is very heavy go to a doctor.
