Lymphoma is a general term for cancers found of the lymphatic system. The lymphatic system is an important part of the body's immune system which fights disease and infections. Approximately five percent of all cancers in teh United States are a type of lymphoma. There are two types of lymphoma called Hodgkin's disease or non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL).

Causes of Lymphoma Cancer:

While the exact causes of lymphoma are not known, there are several risk factors that have been linked to developing lymphoma which are:

• Age: generally the risk increases as age increases
• Infections
• Medical conditions that compromise the immune system
• Exposure to toxic chemicals
• Genetics: Family history of lymphoma

Symptoms of Lymphoma Cancer:

The most common sign of both Hodgkin's disease (HD) and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) is a painless swelling in one or more of the lymph nodes of the neck, collarbone region, armpits, or groin. Other symptoms include: chest pain, trachea, fever, night sweats, weight loss, fatigue, appetite loss, red patches on the skin, and severely itchy skin.

Cures / Preventions for Lymphoma Cancer:

The cure rate for non-Hodgkin's lymphoma ranges from 65 to 100 percent of patients depending on the type of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, the extent of disease at the time of diagnosis and how quickly the lymphoma responds to initial therapy. Initial treatment lasts from several months to a couple of years, depending on the type and extent of the disease.

80 to 98 percent of children and adolescents with Hodgkin's lymphoma are cured of their disease. The cure rate depends on the stage of the lymphoma, associated symptoms, the size of any tumors, and other factors about the child’s disease.

Treatment for Lymphoma Cancer:

Depends on the state of the disease, the size, number and located of the affected lymph nodes, your age and general health, and the symptoms you have. There are treatments for all patients with adult non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Three types of treatment are used:

• Radiation therapy (using high-dose x-rays or other high-energy rays to kill cancer cells and shrink tumors)
• Chemotherapy (using drugs to kill cancer cells and shrink tumors)
• Biological therapy (using the body's immune system to fight cancer
